Here is a funny joke, which may be a funny real life story (I’m not sure). I do know that I immediately saw the male punctuation and my girlfriend saw the female version when looking at it. See what you think:
An English professor wrote up on the board “woman without her man is nothing” and told his students to punctuate it.
The males in the class wrote “Woman, without her man, is nothing.”
The females wrote “Woman! Without her, man is nothing.”
So you see the importance of correct punctuation, despite the best attempts of SMS, Twitter and Facebook to reduce us to no grammar and shortened spellings. Is this the argument for improved English language education in schools or just the evidence of another fight in the battle of the sexes?
